OFFICIAL SALVATION OUTLINE
HOW TO BE SAVED
BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH
A Pauline Gospel Outline from Romans through Philemon
Bible Authority: King James Bible (KJB) only
Study Boundary: Romans through Philemon only. This outline presents salvation for the present
Dispensation of the Grace of God from Paul's epistles, without importing a salvation formula
from another portion of Scripture.
Central truth: A sinner is justified freely by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ and His
finished work - His death for our sins, burial, and resurrection - apart from works.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:”
Ephesians 2:8 KJB
“Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
Ephesians 2:9 KJB

I. RECOGNIZE THE UNIVERSAL PROBLEM OF SIN
Salvation begins with understanding man's condition before God. Scripture does not divide
humanity into people who need salvation and people who do not. All have sinned.
“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:”
Romans 3:10 KJB
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
Romans 3:23 KJB
“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed
upon all men, for that all have sinned:”
Romans 5:12 KJB
No person can establish his own righteousness before God. Our need is not merely
improvement, religion, or reform. We need God's righteousness and God's salvation.
II. UNDERSTAND THE WAGES OF SIN
Sin has a consequence. The sinner cannot solve the problem by accumulating good works,
religious acts, or personal merit.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 KJB
The verse contrasts wages with a gift. Death is earned by sin; eternal life is God's gift through
Jesus Christ our Lord.
III. GOD COMMENDED HIS LOVE TOWARD SINNERS
God did not wait for sinners to make themselves worthy. Christ died for us while we were
sinners.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8 KJB
“Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.”
Romans 5:9 KJB
The basis of justification is not our goodness. The saving work is Christ's, and His blood is
sufficient.
IV. KNOW THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST
Paul plainly declares the gospel he preached and by which believers are saved.
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every
one that believeth...”
Romans 1:16 KJB
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you... By which also
ye are saved...”
1 Corinthians 15:1-2 KJB
“For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins
according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day

according to the scriptures:”
1 Corinthians 15:3-4 KJB
The Gospel of Christ centers upon what Christ accomplished: He died for our sins, He was
buried, and He rose again. Salvation rests upon His finished work, not ours.
V. BELIEVE ON JESUS CHRIST - FAITH, NOT WORKS
Justification is received by faith. Paul repeatedly excludes works as the basis of justification.
“Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:”
Romans 3:24 KJB
“Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.”
Romans 3:28 KJB
“But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is
counted for righteousness.”
Romans 4:5 KJB
“Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ...”
Galatians 2:16 KJB
Saving faith does not offer God religious works as payment. It rests in Jesus Christ and what He
has done for the sinner.
VI. SALVATION IS BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH
Grace means that salvation is God's gift, not a reward earned by human performance.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of
works, lest any man should boast.”
Ephesians 2:8-9 KJB
“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us...”
Titus 3:5 KJB
“Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but
according to his own purpose and grace...”
2 Timothy 1:9 KJB
Nothing can be added to grace as though Christ's work were insufficient. Salvation is not Christ
plus our works; it is received by faith in Christ.
VII. THE BELIEVER RECEIVES GOD'S RIGHTEOUSNESS
The sinner's own righteousness cannot justify him. In Christ, God provides the righteousness
needed.
“But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested... Even the righteousness of
God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe...”
Romans 3:21-22 KJB
“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the
righteousness of God in him.”
2 Corinthians 5:21 KJB

“And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is
through the faith of Christ...”
Philippians 3:9 KJB
The believer stands before God in Christ, not in a righteousness produced by his own
law-keeping.
VIII. THE MOMENT A PERSON BELIEVES, GOD SAVES AND
SEALS
Salvation is not a probationary status that the believer must preserve by personal works. In
Christ, the believer is sealed by the Holy Spirit.
“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in
whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,”
Ephesians 1:13 KJB
“And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.”
Ephesians 4:30 KJB
“And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:”
Colossians 2:10 KJB
The saved person is complete in Christ. Good works belong in the believer's walk after
salvation; they are not the cause or price of salvation.
IX. GOOD WORKS FOLLOW SALVATION - THEY DO NOT
PRODUCE IT
Grace does not teach believers to live carelessly. Paul teaches a godly walk, but he places good
works in their proper order: salvation first, then service.
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before
ordained that we should walk in them.”
Ephesians 2:10 KJB
“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that,
denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly...”
Titus 2:11-12 KJB
We do not work to become saved. Having been saved by grace, believers are instructed to walk
in good works and sound doctrine.
X. A SIMPLE PAULINE SALVATION SUMMARY
According to Romans through Philemon, the issue can be stated plainly:
You are a sinner. The wages of sin is death. Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose
again. God justifies the ungodly freely by His grace. Stop trusting your works, religion,
ceremonies, or personal righteousness to save you. Believe the Gospel of Christ - trust Jesus
Christ and His finished work alone - and receive God's gift of eternal life.
XI. WHAT IS NOT REQUIRED TO BE JUSTIFIED

Page 5
Because justification is by grace through faith without works, no human work can be made a
condition for earning or completing salvation.
“Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that
worketh not, but believeth...”
Romans 4:4-5 KJB
“For by grace are ye saved through faith... Not of works...”
Ephesians 2:8-9 KJB
“And you, being dead in your sins... hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you
all trespasses;”
Colossians 2:13 KJB
Therefore, This Grace Bible Churches does not present water baptism, church membership,
law-keeping, religious ceremonies, giving, reforming one's life, or any other work as a
requirement for justification. The sinner is saved by grace through faith in Christ.
XII. THE ASSURANCE OF THE SAVED BELIEVER
The believer's confidence rests in God's promise and Christ's completed work.
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:”
Romans 5:1 KJB
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus...”
Romans 8:1 KJB
“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life... Nor height, nor depth, nor any other
creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:38-39 KJB
Our assurance is not that we have performed perfectly. Our assurance is that God has justified
us in Christ and that nothing can separate the believer from the love of God which is in Christ
Jesus our Lord.
FINAL APPEAL
Do not trust yourself to save yourself. Do not trust religious works to finish what Christ has
already accomplished. Believe the Gospel of Christ. Trust that Jesus Christ died for your sins,
was buried, and rose again. Rest in God's grace and the sufficiency of Christ.
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:”
Romans 5:1 KJB
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 KJB
